SouthamptonSouthampton is located on the south coast of England. Its location has made it an important port for centuries and it still remains so today. The city is more than 1,500 years old and has many historical attractions. Southampton’s ports have docked some infamous ships, and they are still remembered today by the flocks of tourists who come to see their memorials. The Mayflower Memorial commemorates the Mayflower and Speedwell ships, which carried the pilgrims over to America in 1620. There is a plaque commemorating the US troops (2 million) who left Southampton during World War II. The Titanic was also docked at Southampton. Commemorative shops and restaurants now mark the spot. Thirteen medieval town towers still stand in Southampton, reminding visitors of the city’s past. The Museum of Archeology is one of the best archeological museums in Britain, with over 3,500 artefacts spanning six centuries. There is also the Tudor House Museum, which gives a glimpse into the lives of some of England’s past royalty. The Central Parks in Southampton take up a significant part of the city with their beautiful green expanses. They are excellent for relaxing in. Along the waterfront, visitors will find plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants to enjoy. Many sit in the cafés and watch the passing sailing boats. Many other sights can be visited with ease by car. One must-see site is Stonehenge in Wiltshire. Stonehenge, an ancient stone circle, is one of the most famous historical landmarks in the world. The Isle of Wight can be reached by ferry and has several attractions such as the Ventnor Botanic Gardens, Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle. Southampton International Airport is located about 15 minutes northwest of the city. Travellers can either hire a car from the airport or travel by train, bus or ferry. |
