Guernsey

The quaint, picturesque Channel Island of Guernsey makes the claim of being the warmest place in Britain. Its quiet rural charm and beauty have made it an increasingly popular destination for holiday makers over the past few years.

The island’s capital, St Peter Port, is the centre of life on Guernsey. This lovely little town contains everything a traveller would expect from a much larger city, including museums, historic buildings, nightlife, shopping and fine dining.

One of the architectural highlights is the stately Hauteville House, home to Victor Hugo during his exile from France. The Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery is also worth a visit. It is situated among the impressive terraced Victorian Candie Gardens, which you can easily spend a day exploring.

Despite being a small island, there is plenty of stunning scenery and a number of historical sites from all eras of history. These range from ancient Neolithic burial mounds to the bunkers of World War II and even turreted medieval castles overlooking the dramatic bays. Guernsey is ideal for exploring by car. With all of its secluded coves and bays, it is easy find a beach that you can have to yourself. Many interesting places, such as the 800-year-old de Sausmarez Manor, are within minutes of the capital. The Manor’s spectacular gardens and Art Park are definitely worth a visit. The neighbouring islands of Alderley, Sark and Herm make for interesting day trips and are just a short ferry ride away.

St Peter Port is home to most of the island’s best choices for nightlife. Theatre, classical concerts, comedy shows and cinemas can be found in the city. There are also numerous shopping opportunities in the capital, all of which are tax-free. Diners will have no trouble getting a wonderful meal or a quiet drink. In fact, the island is famous for its excellent seafood restaurants which specialise in fresh delicacies such as lobster, crab and scallops.

Guernsey has its own airport which provides connections to several cities in the UK as well as a few destinations in Europe. Car hire is available at the airport. Ferry links are the other transportation option, with service to the other Channel Islands and northern France.
