EdinburghThe timelessly romantic setting and atmosphere has made Edinburgh a recurrent favourite among world travellers. Its ancient history and architecture provide a colourful backdrop to a Scottish culture full of mystery and tradition. Presiding over the city on a dramatic cliff top is the 1200-year-old Edinburgh Castle. From this landmark, the medieval Royal Mile follows a straight line through the city’s older neighbourhoods to the Palace of Holyrood, the official Scottish Royal residence in Edinburgh. A plethora of Scottish shops selling tartans, bagpipes, golfing gear and other souvenirs line the way. Looming behind the Palace is Arthur’s Seat, a wonderful summer hike. Walking is the best way to explore this medieval city’s cobbled lanes. Edinburgh is home to several quality museums and galleries such as the Museum of Scotland, the National Gallery of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and its newest attraction, the Dynamic Earth exhibition. Scottish culture can be best experienced every August during the Edinburgh Festival, where the boisterous bagpipe bands of the Military Tattoo perform. New Year’s Eve, or Hogmanay, is another popular time of the year to celebrate all things Scottish. The best area for local food and drink all year round is the entertainment district north of Princes street. Whiskey lovers should hire a car and visit the charming nearby port town of Leith and its Scotch Malt Whiskey Society. The 16th century Lauriston Castle’s 30-acre grounds are a tranquil place to relax, and the historical city of Stirling with its castle and William Wallace monument lies between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Also nearby is St Andrews, a golfing Mecca with a lively university and medieval ruins. All of these places are easily reachable by car. Edinburgh International Airport links the city to the UK, Europe and other global destinations. Travelling to cities in the UK can also be easily achieved by using the extensive rail network or by driving. |
