This lively city in the southwest of England has been nominated European Centre of Culture for a good reason. Bristol hosts a staggering line up of festivals and events throughout the year, it has a thriving waterfront area, fine architecture, excellent restaurants and an impressive arts scene.
 
The city is bisected by the Avon River and has a bustling harbour filled with bars, restaurants, galleries and shops. The ‘At Bristol’ complex is a great place to start your explorations. Although hilly, most of the city can be easily explored on foot.
 
The city’s historic cathedral can be found on the trendy Park street, which is lined with student-filled cafés and quirky bars and shops. Another interesting area is Clifton, with its grand architecture and attractions such as an observatory, caves and suspension bridge. There are also a number of excellent bars and good restaurants in this neighbourhood.
 
There are countless cultural opportunities in Bristol. The city is home to the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery as well as the vast Bristol Zoo and Gardens, a constant family favourite. The city is famous for its excellent theatres, and all kinds of shows are performed throughout the year in the many charismatic venues. The Bristol Hippodrome is the city’s main theatre, while the Bristol Colston Hall is the largest concert venue.
 
Another feature that puts Bristol on the map is the vast array of events the city holds throughout the year. St Paul’s Carnival, the Bristol International Balloon Festival, Bristol Poetry Festival and Bristol Fireworks Festival are just a few of the bigger street fairs, carnivals, and parades that fill the calendar.
 
Bristol is situated in the lovely southwestern corner of Britain and hiring a car is the perfect way to see all of the sites and quaint towns outside of the city. Near the town of Wells lie Wookey Hole Caves, a fascinating area of caverns and underground lakes. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the many stellar golf courses around Bristol, many of which have fantastic views.
 
The city is serviced by several airports, with Bristol International Airport being the closest to the city. Cars can be hired from the airport. Bristol has two main train stations, Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. Buses depart from the bus station on Marlborough street.
