Belfast

In recent years, Belfast has shed the hostile image that it acquired in recent decades due to political disputes and it is now a lively, inspirational city that welcomes visitors. It is rich in history and culture, and is a gateway to the beautiful countryside of Northern Ireland.

The city is home to some stunning architecture and impressive historical sights. Belfast Castle sits on the slopes of Cave Hill and overlooks Belfast Lough. It offers one of the best panoramic views of the Belfast area. The original castle was built by the Normans in the late 12th century; however, the site was burnt down in 1708. The new building was completed in 1870, but it was only officially opened to the public in 1988.

Other notable buildings in the city include the City Hall, Parliament Buildings, Queens University and Alexandra Park Gate Lodge.

Fernhill House Museum displays scenes depicting the history of the Shankill area, home rule and the both World Wars, while Ulster Folk Museum gives visitors an insight into the rural Ireland of past times. Meanwhile, the Odyssey exhibition and entertainment complex is a great place for a family day out.

For a break from the bustle of the city, visit Grovelands. This is a lovely city park with an enclosed house garden and nursery areas. While Grovelands is particularly delightful and colourful in the spring and the summer, the trees, shrubs and conifers help to create a year-round garden.

There are several beautiful parks and estates just outside of the city centre, most notably the Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park. This attractive parkland is easily reachable by car, while the Barnett Demesne Park and Belvoir Forest Park are also perfect for escaping the city.

Farther afield, Northern Ireland boasts an enchanting countryside. Two hours’ drive north you will find the Giant's Causeway. This is a wild, coastal landscape that is full of Irish charm.

Those looking for a lively nightlife will not be disappointed. There are lively pubs everywhere, many of which have live music.

Belfast International Airport receives flights from the UK, Amsterdam, Brussels and New York. There are regional connections to all major cities throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, although many of these arrive and depart from the more convenient Belfast City Airport. Hiring a car is the most popular and advisable mode of transport for visitors. The road network is well developed and there are no border checks when crossing into the Republic of Ireland.
