ZurichZurich is Switzerland's most populous and cosmopolitan city. It is known as the intellectual and cultural capital of the nation and it offers an intoxicating combination of the historic and the modern. It is a popular destination with people throughout Europe and worldwide. Full of pedestrian streets and winding alleyways lined with 16th and 17th century houses, the old city is located at the northern end of Lake Zurich. The elegant Main street (Bahnhofstrasse) is great for a stroll, but very expensive for shopping. The enormous clock face on the 13th century tower of St Peter's Church is an iconic symbol of Switzerland. The Museum of Fine Arts is one of Europe’s finest museums, offering a large collection dating from the 15th century on permanent display. Meanwhile, the Swiss National Museum details the life and times of the Swiss nation. Both are extremely interesting and well worth a visit. Along the length of Lake Zurich are picnic, sunbathing and swimming areas. These are especially popular with the locals on summer evenings. Driving inside Zurich is not popular, but outside the main city, tourists are encouraged to hire a car and explore the beautiful countryside. Simply driving along Lake Zurich is rewarding. There are many quaint little villages along the shoreline where you can stop and walk around. Situated on the nearby Zurichberg Mountain, Dolder Zoo boasts over 350 animal species. Located among stunning scenery with lovely walks into the forest behind the grounds, it makes for a great family day out. The Lindt and Sprüngli Chocolate Factory is a must for all sweet lovers. It is located a few miles south of the city centre and has a wonderful free museum, along with free chocolate. Due to its popularity, it is subject to occasional closures, therefore, it is advisable to call before visiting. Zurich’s Kloten Airport is a busy international airport with many daily flights to all major European cities and several transatlantic routes. It is located six miles north of the city centre and is well serviced with regular and reliable shuttles to the centre. Train services also run from the airport. Taxis are available but are not cheap in Switzerland. For those who prefer to drive, car hire is available at the airport. |
