Valencia

Valencia is a place of historic sights, good beaches, and excellent weather all year round. Home of the Holy Grail and paella, Valencia also hosts one of Spain’s biggest spring festivals, Las Fallas, which includes ritual effigy burning, bullfights, music and fireworks.

With its history dating back to Roman times, Valencia is characterised by grand squares and Baroque buildings. The main square, Plaza del Ayuntamiento, is awash with sculptures and art, and the Town Hall in the square houses several pieces of renowned artistic work. During a two-week long festival known as Las Fallas, a large crowd gathers in the main square every day at 14:00 for the impressive firework event known as Mascletá.

One of Valencia's most popular attractions is the famous palace, Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas. It is one of Spain’s most beautiful palaces, with an extravagantly sculptured interior and a façade that resembles running water. It is a prime example of Rococo architecture. The original building dates from the 16^th century although it was completely renovated during the 18^th century.

The Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados is the site of the statue of the same name. Constructed between 1652 and 1667, the basilica is attached to the cathedral by a magnificent Renaissance archway. The virgin was known for her efforts in protecting the less fortunate. Excellent views of the city can be seen from the tower of the impressive cathedral.

There are many fascinating museums in Valencia to visit including two art galleries, a bullfighting museum and a science museum. For those who want a break from historical buildings and tracing history, the city offers stunning parks and commendable botanical gardens.

There are many places nearby that are worth a visit and, by hiring a car, they can be easily reached. Costa de Azahar is known as the orange blossom coast and is home to a Roman theatre, a castle and a modern beach resort. Torrevieja is a lively town in the southern part of the Valencian area and is surrounded by two large natural lagoons.

Valencia Airport is located five miles from the city and has international and domestic flights connecting the city with all major Spanish and European destinations. Car hire is available at the airport for ease of travel; alternatively, train services run from the Costa Blanca.
