ReusLocated in southeast Catalonia, Reus is the region's major commercial and cultural centre. Not far from the sea, this town is conveniently located within easy reach of most of the region’s important cities. The town centre has a laidback feeling and boasts a variety of dining and shopping options along with plenty of historic architecture. The Priory Church of St Pere is the most striking surviving building from old Reus. Built in 1512, this church was constructed on the site of the previous Roman-style Church of Santa Maria. It is one of the primary attractions that draw tourists to Reus. A wealth of historical sites inhabit the city. The most notable architecture in the city was designed by Pere Caselles. Examples include the Casa Grau, the Institut Pere Mata, and the Casa Laguna. Surprisingly, the town has two separate museums known by the same name, the Regional Salvador Vilaseca Museum. One displays art and the other one is dedicated to archaeology. The Spanish artist, Gaudi, was born in Reus. A tour called the Gaudi’s Reus Trail illustrates architecture and art connected with this man, as well as his affiliations with the city of Reus. The cliffs and inlets of the Costa Brava are a short drive from Reus. Nearby Tarragona contains ancient, well-preserved Roman ruins. Most notable is the 2000-year-old amphitheatre with views of the coast spanning the Old Roman city. Barcelona can also be reached by car, and offers all the amenities of a large, urban city. Catalonia is well-known for its outdoor sports and activities, including horse-back riding, shooting, hunting, and hiking. A day trip to Reus’ nearby countryside allows for excellent hiking through the orchards and the region’s many hillsides. Water sports can be enjoyed in nearby Calella. There is an airport in Reus located about a kilometre from the city. Charter flights using this airport link the area to the majority of primary Spanish destinations as well as other European destinations. Most traffic into the region is handled through Barcelona International Airport; Reus can be reached from this airport by car in under an hour. |
