Murcia

Located near the Costa Brava, Murcia is the capital of its region. It is a town famed for its extensive shopping options and renowned nightlife, along with a historical legacy, several monuments and some fascinating museums.

Murcia has a well-established nightlife, maintained in part by its status as a university town and its heavy student population. Many visitors come to the city with shopping in mind as there are a host of high-quality shops and boutiques in the Corte Inglés shopping plaza.

Santa Maria Cathedral sits at the centre of Murcia and has excellent views over the city from the top of the main tower. Built in the 14^th century on the site of an old mosque, this originally Gothic cathedral suffered extensive flood damage in 1735. The design is now decidedly Baroque in style, reflecting the architectural climate at the time of its renovation.

Near the cathedral, the Glorieta de España offers respite from the high-paced atmosphere of the city centre. Visitors can relax in this palm tree-lined square in when they need a respite from their exploration of the city of Murcia.

There is much to see in the areas surrounding Murcia, and hiring a car is the easiest way travel. There is a string of beautiful beaches and various markets that are all worth visiting. Lloret de Mar is one of Spain’s premier resorts situated at the centre of the Costa Brava. Heading along the same coastline, you will find Estartit, where scuba diving is on offer. Heading inland, drivers can visit the Jalon Valley, known for its almond, lemon and orange groves as well as the Cascada de El Algar waterfalls.

Murcia’s airport, San Javier, is situated 55kms from the city centre. Most flights into this airport are domestic. Extensive international connections are available at El Altet Airport in Alicante. Busses and trains are available from the airport to take you to Murcia, but these can be very slow. Hiring a car is the best way to travel around Murcia.
