Mahon

The historic city of Mahon is the capital of Menorca Island in Spain. It is a pleasant, relaxed and sun-filled alternative to the otherwise busy tourist resorts of the Balearic Islands. Situated in one of Europe’s premier natural harbours, Mahon’s setting has been coveted throughout history by various European armadas because of its beauty and location.

The southern coast of Mahon is flat and offers beautiful beaches, the number one draw for tourists and visitors. The city itself has many examples of British Georgian architecture including Golden Farm, a stunning mansion where Admiral Lord Nelson took a brief sabbatical to write his memoirs.

Mahon contains a variety of historic ruins. The Castell de Santa Agueda is an elevated ruin of an ancient Roman stronghold set on a hill a few kilometres from the city centre.

King Alfonso III is hailed as the island’s liberator. A monument in his honour stands in the Plaza de Conquesta. Nearby stands the San Roque Arch, Mahon’s oldest historical site. It is part of the old city wall built in the 18^th century. The 18^th century Church of Santa Maria along with the even older Town Hall are both located on the square at the heart of the old city.

The island’s size lends itself to daytrips and exploration by car. Cuitadella, the old capital and spiritual hub of the island, is well worth a visit. This distinctly Moorish port city is full of bars and restaurants where stunning views of the harbour can be enjoyed. In contrast to the flat southern land, the northern sector of the island is rocky and forested, with excellent views of the coast.

Mahon has earned a reputation for gin production. The distillery of Xoriguer Gin is open for touring, and brew samples can be ordered. To try out the local brew, visit one of the many bars and restaurants dotted around the island as a full range of dining options are available.

Arrival by air is the fastest and most convenient way of approaching the island. All of Europe’s major airports offer service to Mahon; and those flights arriving from outside Europe generally connect to Mahon through Madrid or Barcelona.
