MadridAs the capital of Spain, Madrid sports an impressive array of grand avenues, historical monuments, and fascinating museums. The city also fosters an exciting nightlife as well as a variety of shops and restaurants offering local and international cuisine. Habsburg Madrid, or Madrid de las Austrias, lies at the heart of the old town. Developed under the patronage of the 16th century monarchy, this area is the oldest in the city and includes Madrid’s government headquarters, Puerta del Sol and Casa de Correos. Commissioned by Felipe II, the principal square, Plaza Mayor, was used for multiple purposes ranging from coronations to public executions, and fiestas, to the infamous Inquisition. Plaza de Puerta Cerrada is nearby and houses the 18th-century church of San Miguel, which is designed and built in the Italian baroque style. The Town Square (Plaza de la Villa) offers a historical glimpse into the city’s past, featuring the Casa de Cisneros, a picturesque 16th century palace that was originally built for Cardinal Cisneros and has recently been restored. It is currently home to several town hall offices. Sixteenth-century architecture is in abundance throughout this region. A short drive in any direction allows for stunning views of historic palaces and cathedrals, as well as access to several museums. An hour’s drive north of Madrid, you will find Segovia. It is a popular tourist destination most famous for its well preserved Roman aqueduct. Alcazar Castle and the Gothic cathedral are also nearby and definitely worth a visit. The palace and monastery complex, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, is 50kms from Madrid and was the former residence of Phillip II. Built in 1563, this palace is home to the burial vault Panteon de los Reyes and is the final resting place for many of Spain’s past monarchs. Madrid is home to Spain’s busiest airport. Located northeast of the downtown district, Barajas International Airport links the capital to all of Spain’s major cities. International destinations span the whole world, with an emphasis on South America. Several train stations service Madrid as well, but car rental remains the most affordable and convenient means of exploring the region. |
