Girona

The city of Girona stands on a hill towering above the Ter Valley, just over an hour’s drive north of Barcelona. Its medieval past has been well preserved in the city’s architecture, with a mixture of architectural styles evident. The city’s peaceful atmosphere and traditional character make it a perfect holiday destination for those who want a mix of relaxation and culture.

Lined with rich red and ochre buildings, the River Onyar divides the old city from the new city. A walk along the lively and scenic riverside will take you to the city’s major landmark, the cathedral. Girona Cathedral was designed and built in the 13^th century and it holds the greatest treasure of the city, the Tapestry of Creation. This is a unique work dating back to about 1100.

The City History Museum (Museu d’Història de la Ciutat) is housed in an 18^th century monastery. Full of alcoves, the former monastery has ventilated seating where the deceased monks were left to dry for two years before their mummified corpses were displayed.

Girona was an Arab town for over 200 hundred years, which is evident from the narrow streets in the centre. There was also a large Jewish community here for 600 hundred years. The Jewish Quarter is full of narrow alleyways rich in culture and history.

Girona is very close to both France and Andorra, which can both be visited easily by car. Barcelona is only an hour’s drive away and farther down the coast is Calella, which has a two-mile long beach with excellent water sports facilities.

Girona airport is situated nine kilometres from the city and offers very good domestic connections. Limited international flights to Europe are offered. Car hire is available at the airport and the main train station in Girona has services running to all of Spain’s destinations and many European cities.
