Home > Carhire > Europe > Spain > Fuerteventura

The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura has some of the most outstanding beaches in Europe. These beaches provide the perfect place to relax in the sun or to take part in various water sports such as windsurfing, snorkelling and swimming. With its wonderfully warm climate, the island is an ideal holiday location all year round.

La Olivia is a stunning town and the capital of the island. It has all the modern amenities you would expect from a tourist resort including a lively bar and a restaurant area. In the centre is the town's main church, a beautiful building dedicated to the Virgen de la Candelaria. The church dominates the town and its large square bell tower can be seen for miles.

There are many new attractions in Fuerteventura including the Betancuria Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography. Here, tourists are encouraged to learn about the island’s landscape and culture.

The Archeological Museum (Casa Museo Arquebiologico) is situated on the main street which runs through the town. It contains a collection of extremely interesting archeological discoveries including statues of fertility gods. Next door is the Centro Insular de Artesania, where traditional arts and crafts are documented.

Fuerteventura is regarded as the oldest of all of the Canaray Islands and the island is full of interesting curves and concaves caused by past volcano eruptions, the last one occurring over 7,000 years ago.

A short drive will take you to the former capital, Betancuria. This town lies in a very attractive valley, at the side of a long dry riverbed. In 1593, the pirate Jaban attacked the town and it was reduced to a pile of debris. Betancuria was not fully restored until 1691. Situated in the north of the island is the lively town of Corralejo, which has become one of the most popular resorts on the island. Here you will find excellent bars and restaurants.

Fuerteventura International Airport receives flights from all major European cities; however, the other Canary Islands receiving the majority of international flights. Flights between the islands can be chartered and prices vary depending on the season. Car hire is available at the airport, while ferry services takes people to mainland Spain.
