FunchalFunchal is the capital of the Madeira archipelago and is located approximately 370 miles from the Moroccan coast. The city has been under Portuguese rule since 1662. The area is a dramatic blend of volcanic landscape and lush semi-tropical vegetation. Perhaps the greatest attraction of Funchal is its amazing environment, in which you will find some truly spectacular gardens and plants. There are a number of parks and botanical gardens such as the Quinta de Palheiro and the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. The town is a lovely place to walk around. A leisurely stroll will allow visitors to see some stunning architecture and decorative paving. The 15th century Convento de Satna and the 16th century church of Igreja de Colegio both lie within easy reach of the main square. A visit to the Adegas de Sao Francisco allows tourists a chance to see how the famous Maderia wine is manufactured and stored. Shopping is also a popular pastime in Funchal. The Funchal Workers Market has a huge selection of vegetable, fruits, fish, flowers and nuts, while the vibrant City Market at Placa de Comercio features some wonderful handicrafts and food. Those travellers who wish to experience the nightlife can visit the Entertainment Complex at the Casino Park or a nearby dance club called the Copacabana. Some notable restaurants include Casa da Carochinha and O Patio, located in the centre of the town. A short drive out of Funchal is the famous view point Eira do Serrado, which looks out over the Grande Curral, a deep crater left by an extinct volcano. The traditional and striking triangular shaped homes of the inhabitants of the island can be seen in Santana on the north coast. Madeira Airport can be reached from most parts of the world by direct or charter flights. The easiest way to get to Funchal is via Lisbon on a 90-minute TAP flight. The area is easily accessible by car, available for hire from the airport although buses and taxis also run around the island. |
