AmsterdamThe Dutch government’s thoroughly liberal views on controversial issues such as prostitution and cannabis smoking have lead to Amsterdam’s reputation as one of Europe’s most laid back destinations. Although many curious visitors are drawn to Amsterdam for its reputation, many more come for the beauty of the tree lined canals, old crooked houses and cobbled streets that give the city its unique atmosphere. Compared to other European capitals, the centre of Amsterdam is small and compact, making it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. The centre is laid out along four semi-circular canals connected by dozens of smaller lanes and waterways, the banks of which are lined with elegant 16th and 17th century merchant houses. One of Amsterdam’s most famous attractions is the eerie yet moving Anne Frankhuis, the house where Anne Frank wrote her diary. The house has been left untouched since the war and is a must for most visitors. Another of the city’s world famous attractions is the Van Gogh Museum. Opened in 1973, the museum is home to over 200 paintings as well as every sketch, etching or item of correspondence ever produced by Van Gogh. As with many of Amsterdam’s top attractions, visitors should consider arriving early to avoid the crowds. Although driving in Amsterdam is simply not practical, the rest of the Netherlands is small enough for visitors to explore by car. The Hague is home to Dutch Royalty and government as well as grand mansions and art galleries. The quaint town of Delft is famous for its pottery, and Haarlem has all the grandeur of Amsterdam without the numbers of tourists. To the south, you will find the world’s largest garden, the Keukenhof. Amsterdam has the reputation of being one of Europe’s party capitals, with thousands of cafés, bars and clubs offering entertainment into the early hours. Lovers of live music should head to the Rembrantsplein-Leidseplein area, while those looking for something a little spicier should head to Walletjes. Located 10kms to the southwest of the city, Schiphol International Airport is one of the worlds busiest and offers flights to every continent. The airport is well equipped and organised and its terminals offer connections to all of Europe’s main cities as well as to top destinations world wide. |
