Palermo

The Sicilian city of Palermo is beautifully situated between the sea and the imposing Monte Pellegrino. For centuries, travellers have been drawn to Palermo for its stunning scenery and architectural heritage. Today the city is still the most popular tourist destination in Sicily.

The highlight for many visitors to Palermo is the sheer number of magnificent buildings scattered around the city. These range from ornate royal palaces to Baroque and Arab-influenced churches. Many of the city’s most famous buildings feature exquisite mosaic work which is said to be as good as any other in the world.

One of Palermo’s more unusual attractions is the Capuchin Catacombs. The Catacombs contain the mummified remains of over 8,000 former residents of the city, dating back to 1533. The practice was begun by the Capuchin friars who embalmed the bodies and then hung them along the walls of the Catacombs dressed in their best outfit. The last body added to the spectacle was in 1920.

Another of Palermo’s most popular yet unusual attractions is the Marionette Museum (Museo delle Marionette). It is dedicated to the age old Sicilian art of puppetry and is well worth a visit. The museum contains the world’s biggest collection of puppets from all corners of the globe, including many from the Far East and even some traditional English Punch and Judy dolls.

There are many interesting attractions within an easy drive of the city so hiring a car is a worthwhile option. Head a few kilometres south to the town of Monreale and visit the world renowned cathedral, or simply laze on the beach at Mondello. Alternatively, head just outside of the city and explore the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Palermo International Airport is located 32kms from the city, and is easily reachable by car along a well-signposted route from the centre. Alternatively, there are direct rail and bus links into the city operating around the clock. The airport offers mainly domestic flights, with the majority of international visitors arriving via Rome.
