Milan

Milan is Italy’s second city and financial centre. It is known to visitors as one of the fashion capitals of the world. Genuine shoppers and window shoppers alike flock to Milan’s expensive boutiques and fashion houses, while others come to explore the city’s reputation for style, food and entertainment.

The centre of activity in Milan is Duomo Square (Piazza del Duomo). The square is dominated by the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. This dates from the 14^th century and houses over 3500 statues. Nearby you will find the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. In the rectory of the convent is Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece ‘The Last Supper’. Owing to overwhelming visitor numbers, it is advisable to book in advance.

From Duomo square, head along the Via Dante shopping street to the imposing Sforzesco Castle. It is an old castle containing several excellent museums as well as some particularly fine sculptures. Visitors looking for peaceful and natural surroundings should head to Sempine Park (Parco Sempione), where you will find a large green area perfect for quiet walks and picnics.

As well as fashion, Milan is also famous for its opera and general music scene. Music lovers and the curious alike should not miss the opportunity of a night out at the historic opera house, Teatro alla Scala.

Although Milan has many attractions to keep the visitor busy, there are also plenty of attractions on offer within a reasonable drive of the city. Less than an hour from Milan is the quaint university town of Pavia; the town’s prestigious university claims Christopher Columbus as a former student. Alternatively, head north to the Lombardi plains for beautiful blue lakes and stunning views of the Alps.
