AlgheroA small but potently atmospheric city, Alghero is located just 10kms from the city of Fertilia. There is an abundance of historical buildings, a nearby archaeological site, majestic churches, excellent restaurants and lovely beaches, which all make Alghero a charming and popular holiday destination. The old quarter lies at the heart of Alghero’s culinary, social and retail venues. Bars, restaurants and shops line the length of the three main streets – Via Principe Umberto, Via Carlo Alnerto and Via Roma. A stroll through this vibrant neighbourhood can take just a few moments or an entire day, depending on how long you wish to take for lunch or how much shopping you intend on doing. For fine wine enthusiasts, a highlight of the old town is the Sella and Mosca wine museum. Visitors are led through the process of wine making and can sample a variety of superb blends. Although Alghero’s old quarter is one of the town’s most captivating areas, many other sights are located along the seafront. Sulis Square (Piazza Sulis) is a must on any itinerary, boasting the impressive Espero Rejal tower and is the centre for locals to meet. The towers of San Giacomo, Sant’ Elmo, Magdalena and Porta Terra are also located nearby. Just a short journey from Alghero by car is the necropolis of Anghelu Ruju. This contains almost forty ancient ‘fairy tombs’, small funeral chambers carved into solid rock and dating back to 3000 BC. Also within driving distance (24kms) are the amazing Caves of Neptune, where visitors can feast their eyes on a stunning salt lake surrounded by massive calcite and rock formations. Palmavera, on the road to Porto Conte, is a prehistoric settlement of over 50 small huts enclosing a central tower-like structure. The international airport at nearby Fertilia provides regular connections to both domestic and overseas destinations, while Alghero’s proximity to the SS 131 highway makes it easily accessible by car from Cagliari and other Italian cities. |
