KnockSituated on Ireland’s west coast in County Mayo, the rural town of Knock is a renowned pilgrimage destination. In 1879, fifteen people simultaneously experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John the Baptist. The spot in which the visions occurred is now marked by the Knock Shrine. It is a holy place visited by thousands of people each year and often compared to the famous site of Lourdes. In addition to the Knock Shrine, Knock also offers a number of other interesting attractions, including the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Ireland and the Church of the Apparition. In addition to these sights, Knock is located in close proximity to a number of regional attractions, most notably the Ceide Fields Visitors’ Centre. This sprawling prehistoric settlement extends over 1,500 hectares and comprises a collection of enclosures, field systems and graves surrounded by ancient stone walls, all of which date back around 5000 years. The Ceide Fields Visitors’ Centre provides in-depth background information into this Stone Age site through a selection of audio-visual presentations and artefact exhibits. Within driving distance of Knock is Connemara, lying approximately 50kms south of the spiritual centre. Known for its spectacular scenery, Connemara is an unspoilt region of rugged mountain ranges and lush green valleys. Located just a short distance from the town centre, Knock International Airport offers connections to Dublin, London and Manchester. A wider variety of flight choices are available at Dublin International Airport, situated approximately four hours away by car, or Shannon Airport, roughly a three-hour drive from Knock. |
