Bursting with charm and vitality, the small city of Cork is a true Irish haven. The city has the added attractions of rich cultural heritage and scenic surroundings. Nestled at the base of a hilly outcrop next to the River Lee, Cork offers plenty of activities for nature lovers. These include numerous riverside trails, parks and pristine getaways in the surrounding countryside. The ancient castles and cathedrals will fascinate visitors.

Architectural highlights in the city include Desmond Castle and St Finn Barres Cathedral. St Ann’s Church boasts an impressive bell tower which offers fantastic views over the city. Also of interest are the ancient ruins of the original city walls and the Cork City Gaol. Additionally, the 1796 Armada exhibition offers fascinating insight into this historic adventure and is well worth a visit.

Cork’s relatively small size makes it easily navigable on foot and its pedestrian centre and leafy surrounds offer a pleasant environment in which to take a leisurely stroll. An essential stop on any walking tour is the English Market, with its vibrant atmosphere and colourful wares. A wander through the green expanse of Fitzgerald’s Park is another appealing daytime activity.

In rainy weather, the city’s abundant pubs provide many a cosy sanctuary, with Irish banter, live music and roaring fires to stave off the cold. The city centre is also dotted with a wide selection of restaurants serving tradition Irish meals as well as international cuisine.

Cork is within easy reach of many legendary Irish attractions and hiring a car to explore the surrounding region is an excellent option for visitors. Just 30 minutes’ drive from the city, the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle is one of Ireland’s major attractions, believed to bring luck to those that bestow a kiss on it. Also within easy driving access is the pretty seafront town of Cobh, with its well preserved historic buildings and narrow, snaking lanes.

An international airport is situated within a short drive of the city centre. It provides frequent flights to a wide selection of European destinations, while Bus Eireann coaches offer connections throughout the country.
