Munich

Munich is a vibrant tourist destination and is popular for its Gothic architecture, parks and museums. The Oktoberfest continues to attract tourists annually and is easily one of the world’s most famed festivals.

At the centre of the old city lies a vibrant square where you can explore nearby churches or relax in one of the sidewalk cafés in Marienplatz. The 19^th century Gothic building of Neues Rathaus is a popular attraction located on the northern side of the square.

In Schwabing, Europe’s largest park, the English Garden provides scenic walking routes and boating. Home of the Oktoberfest, Theresienwiese is a suburb with trendy cafés and restaurants. Window-shopping can be enjoyed in Maximilianstrasse, which also boasts stylish nightclubs and bars.

Schloss Schleiβheim Palace is a beautiful palace just outside Munich. It is home to an impressive collection of porcelain and is renowned for its remarkable Baroque interior. Exhibitions on aviation history can be seen at the Air museum, which is part of the Deutsches Museum.

Lake Starnberg is only 30 minutes away by car from Munich and for many is a welcome break from the frenetic city. Next to the lake is a historical retreat located in the Five Lakes District. A favourite amongst tourists is the Benedictine monastery of Andechs, where you can enjoy tasty beers brewed by Andechs monks, a tradition of over 500 years. The surrounding Bavarian countryside is beautiful in itself and worth exploring.

Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport provides flights to cities all over the world, either direct or via Frankfurt. Domestic routes operate over six times a day. Trains run from the airport to most major European cities. A direct bus runs between Munich, London, Paris, Brussels and Vienna. Driving in Germany is easy and a convenient way to see the sights because of the efficient autobahn network. Hire cars are available at the airport.
