In addition to being the home of French aviation and space travel, Toulouse is also a vibrant university town full of historical architecture, museums and fascinating educational attractions.

 

Much of Toulouse’s heritage lies in the historic town centre of Ville Rose. The Capitole, situated in the town’s main square, has been the seat of government since the 12^th century. It houses some interesting murals and artwork by Henri Martin. To the west of the Place du Capitole is the fortress-like Church of the Jacobins, which was built in the 13^th century. Next to the church is an art exhibition hall and nearby is the Hotel de Bernuy, a magnificent Renaissance mansion. North of the Place du Capitole is the Basilica of St Sernin, the largest Romanesque church in France.

 

Toulouse is full of stunning historical attractions such as the Rue Croix-Baragon, the Cathedral of St Etienne, Notre-Dame-du-Taur, the Griffoul, the Pont-Neuf and the St Cyprien quarter. You could spend several days exploring all of the sites. Museum buffs will appreciate the Musée St Raymond and the Musee des Augustins, which are just two of the noteworthy museums in the area.

 

Toulouse makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding southwestern region of France by car. The town of Albi is just a short drive away and is home to a striking cathedral. Albi is also home to a large collection of Toulouse Lautrec paintings.

 

Families will find plenty to do in Toulouse. For those who are interested in space travel, the Cite de l’Espace amusement park includes a replica of the Mir space station which can be explored. Many of the exhibitions are designed to be interactive and educational and provide a rare insight into the world of space exploration. A tour of the Aerospatiale complex is also possible with a little pre-planning.

 

The city is directly served by Toulouse International Airport, which offers numerous flights to cities in France and international destinations further afield. Car hire is available from the airport and taxis are also on hand.
