NiceA delightful place steeped in history, the French city of Nice is located in the Baie des Anges region and is within easy access of popular destinations such as St Tropez, Monaco, Antibes and Provence.
The town's character is epitomised by its charming narrow winding streets and squares, which offer views of wonderful architecture from the Baroque, Genoese, Provencal and medieval styles. Overlooking the town is a hill known as Le Château. Beyond this hill, you'll find the town's port, complete with its scenic Île-de-Beauté square. Among Nice's visual highlights is the Palais Lascaris, a stunning example of architecture from the Genoese Baroque. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral, with its six majestic onion domes, sits above the skyline. Also noteworthy are the churches of Saint-François-de-Paule and Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin, the Miséricorde chapel and St Reparate Cathedral. On a cultural level, Nice more than amply meets the grade, with art galleries such as The Museum of International Art (Musée International d'Art), The Matisse Museum (Matisse Musée), The Museum of Fine Art (Musée des Beaux-Arts), The Museum of Modern Art and Contemporary Art (Musée d'Art et d'Art Contemporain) and The Museum of Native Art (Naïf Anatole-Jakovsky Musée). Visitors to all of these galleries can revel in the wonders of works by artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Monet and Kandinsky. Leaving the city for a while, visitors can find a variety of attractions in the area that immediately surrounds Nice. Cimiez is a suburb featuring a 16th century monastery and the ancient city of Cemenelum. Antibes is a short drive down the coast and offers fantastic beaches and a variety of tourist facilities. Cannes and Saint Tropez are also within easy driving distance. Nice Airport is an international facility handling flights from large number of European cities and some transatlantic destinations. Train connections between Nice and major French cities are excellent, while the country's road network is easily negotiated. |
