CarcassonneInternational and local visitors alike come to Carcassonne to enjoy the medieval character as ruins, castles and cathedrals are in abundance. Carcassonne is the only fortified town in Europe that is still inhabited. This unique city was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Castles are by the far the biggest attraction in Carcassonne. The brilliant medieval Cathar castles are scattered throughout the region. They take visitors back in time with their splendour, towering turrets, impenetrable walls and unassailable defensive positions. Montsegur Castle is probably the most famed of the Cathar castles, with stunning views from the top. Other castles that can be visited include Count’s Castle, Arques, Termes, Villerouge-Termenes, Lastours and Minerve. All date back to the Catholic-Cathar Crusades. There are many other sights to see as well as castles. The Midi Cana (Canal du Midi) was built to link the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and with its amazing scenic spots it is a delightful day out. There are plenty of significant religious sites to visit. Fonfroide Abbey is one of the great Cistercian abbeys and is in an excellent state of preservation. The abbey gives an excellent insight into 12th century monastic life. Comtal Castle (Château Comtal) and the Basilique St-Nazaire Cathedral are also worth a visit. The Middle-Age Memories Museum (Musée des Memoires du Moyen Age) displays information on life in the Middle Ages and the Crusades for tourists. Alternatively, there are numerous restaurants and charming cafés where you can enjoy the local atmosphere. The surrounding countryside makes a very good day out. Hiring a car is the best way to see the scenery, including the unique circular design of all of the medieval villages. The neighbouring town of Beziers is a great place to enjoy some good wine, bullfights, fairs and the Friday flower market. Also in Beziers is the Poetes Plateau (Plateau des Poetes), which attracts tourists for its beautiful gardens. Toulouse International Airport is the closest airport to Carcassonne and offers direct international flights. Travellers can also get to Carcassonne by train from Paris or other major cities in France. |
