Prague

The Czech Republic’s capital is a popular tourist destination because of its many medieval and charming attractions. Old squares, magnificent cathedrals, interesting museums and stunning castles give Prague its special appeal. The lively city is both romantic and exciting for visitors the world over.

Prague Castle, (Prazsky Hrad), is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the city. It is also said to be the largest castle in the world (570m by 130m). For nearly a thousand years, the country has been run from the castle and tourists flock here to get a taste of its history. Some of the castle’s appeal includes a Spanish Hall and Rudolf Gallery, St Vitius Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and the Royal Garden.

There are many historical wonders to visit in Prague including the Hradcany area, which has features dating back 500 years. Other sights nearby include the Strahov Monastery, the Mala Strana quarter and Nerudova Street. All are incredibly picturesque and definitely worth a visit. Petrin Hill, a vast park in the middle of the city, is perfect for relaxing, with numerous paths, ponds and lakes to enjoy.

A sight not to miss is the Old Town Square (Wenceslas Square). It still holds its medieval charm despite now being filled with markets, pavement cafés and buskers. Facing the square is the Old Town Hall, which features the famous 600- year-old astronomical clock, Powder Tower and Kinsky Palace.

There is plenty to see by car, as many great attractions lie outside of the main city. Pruhonice is one of these. It is a charming old village with quaint shops and winding lanes. Its biggest draw card, however, is the 13th century castle now occupied by the Czech Academy of Sciences. Kutna Hora, which is also not far from the city, is a World Heritage site. Here you will find a colourful square, medieval alleyways and Cathedral of Santa Barbara.

Prague has two airports. Most of the international flights arrive at Ruzyne Airport, which is 10kms northwest of the city. Karlovy Vary Airport is much smaller and mainly used for domestic flights with a few regional flights to neighbouring countries. Public transport in Prague includes buses, metro trains and taxis.
