Isle of ManLocated halfway between England and Ireland in the Irish Sea, The Isle of Man is a unique self-governing island packed with history and beauty. Although small -- the entire island is under 50kms long -- the island has something for everyone. Popular activities include lazing on a quiet beach, diving for shipwrecks, bird watching and golf. The island’s small capital city of Douglas is a hub of activity on this otherwise rural island. Douglas is small enough to explore on foot, or alternatively ride on one of the horse-drawn trams still being used here. Strand street is where you will find the main shopping district and a short walk from here will bring you to the sea front, which is complete with hotels, piers and night life. The most impressive example of a medieval castle in Britain can be found in the centre of Castletown. Castle Rushen was built in 1200 by a Viking king and is now a major attraction for visitors. Another historical sight worth a visit is the Laxey Wheel. This huge water wheel claims to be the biggest in Europe and possibly the world. Stunning views of the countryside can be seen from the top. A must for many visitors to the Isle of Man is to take a trip to the top of its highest peak, Snaefel. This can be reached in about 30 minutes by electric railway and the summit features a café, pub and museum as well as amazing views. Being such a small island, the Isle of Man is ideal for exploring by car. Regardless of where you are staying, you are within a short drive of all the island’s beaches, towns and attractions. Although Douglas is the centre for nightlife, excellent dining options can be found throughout the island. Many of the island’s most popular restaurants serve up a selection of local seafood such as fresh crab, Manx lobster and the local scallops known as Queenies. The island’s single airport is located at Ronaldsway (near Castletown). From here, flights operate to many major airports throughout the UK and Ireland, as well as to continental Europe. |
