Rome

Home > Carhire > Europe > Italy > Rome

The outstanding monuments of Rome have been attracting international visitors for centuries. The numbers of tourists increase every year mainly due to an extensive restoration program which has seen many sites returned to their former glory.

Historically, the centrepiece of ancient Rome and still the centre of activity today is the Forum. This area is home to a number of imposing remnants of the past such as the Arch of Septimus Severus, the Temple of Saturn and the House of the Vestals. Alongside the Forum you will find the 2000-year-old Colosseum. The newly restored amphitheatre is once again a venue for public shows, although these days you will find music rather than gladiators on the program.

The city of Rome is packed full of attractions and only those with unlimited time can fit them all in. There are, however, some that are a must for everyone and the Pantheon is one of these. It was built as a temple to the most important gods of ancient Rome and is still in superb condition.

Yet another essential stop on any visit to Rome is the opulent splendour of the Vatican. Visitors should spend some time exploring St Peter’s Square, the Vatican gardens and St Peter’s Basilica. No visit to the Vatican would be complete without spending some time marvelling at Michelangelo’s famous ceiling paintings in the Sistine Chapel.

There are many sites worth visiting for those travelling by car. By heading into the hills to the north of the city, the Tivoli gardens can be visited. These world famous gardens have been attracting visitors for more than 1000 years. The Appian Way is an ancient Roman road which runs from the outskirts of the city to Brindisi. Enroute are many points of interest including the Circus of Maxentius, Roman tombs and the Catacombs, where persecuted Christians were laid to rest.

The city of Rome is served by two main airports. Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) International Airport is located 32kms to the west of the city and provides flights to most of the world’s major cities. Ciampino Airport is situated 15kms southeast and provides mainly domestic flights although some flights do fly to Europe from here.
