Frankfurt

The commercial city of Frankfurt attracts most of Germany’s visitors and is the country’s central hub for air travel. A worthwhile tourist destination, the city offers several museums and historical buildings, as well as a lively nightlife.

The Old City (Altstadt) is the heart of Frankfurt and has charming sidewalk cafés that allow you to enjoy the town’s historical architecture. Appealing exhibitions of pre- and post-war Frankfurt can be enjoyed at the German Historical Museum (Historisches Museum). Within walking distance is the Goethe museum, the former residence of the world-renowned writer.

On the south bank is the stretch known as Museum Embankment. This area boasts a large variety of film, art and war museums. The rustic appeal of Old Germany can be found in the neighbourhood of Sachsenhausen. If you are looking for chic boutiques and trendy restaurants, you need to head for Schweitzer Strasse, the fashionable district.

There are many areas worth exploring by car located outside of Frankfurt. These include the recently restored Opera House, Holzhausen Park, Hauptfriedhof cemetery and the wealthy suburb of Nordend. West of Frankfurt, the pleasant town of Hoechst is full of Baroque buildings and palaces. The Town Castle houses a street festival and local market. Beautiful views of Frankfurt can be witnessed northeast of the city in Lohrberg. During winter, many of the locals go sledding down the steep hill in Lohrberg.

Bornheim is another area that is known for its trendy cafés and bars. There are also many local delicacies on offer, while Bockenheim is a quick drive northwest of Frankfurt. This university town is known for its nightlife and the streets are full of local bands performing.

Flughafen Frankfurt-am-Main is Europe’s busiest airport, with flights operating between main transatlantic and European cities. Car hire is available at the airport and buses are available to take you to destinations in Frankfurt and beyond.
