Cologne

A stunning city boasting Roman origins, Cologne is home to internationally acclaimed museums and beautiful cathedrals. With a population of over one million, this cosmopolitan city is known for its extravagant nightlife, culinary delicacies, plazas and the annual carnivals.

The Dom is a 13^th century Gothic cathedral and is known as the city’s most prominent landmark. Supported by 56 pillars, the two-spire structure has incredible stained-glass windows. There are 12 bells within the cathedral as well as celebrated works of art such as the Sarcophagus of the Magi.

The Museum complex between the cathedral and the Rhine is ideal for art lovers. Containing paintings from 14^th century Dutch and German artists, the sky lit surroundings make for a very enjoyable visit. Along the Rhine is the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, giving a detailed account of Roman history.

The most famous of the eight municipal museums is the Ludwig Musuem. There are several private museums within the city, most of which provide a look at the prominent works of 20^th century art. The Old Town (Altstadt) is popular among businessmen and tourists alike. Chic cafés and bars can be found at Südstadt, otherwise known as St Severins quarter. The city centre offers concerts, operas, plays and ballet performances on most evenings. West of the centre is the relaxed area of Belgisches Viertel.

A popular outdoor tourist attraction easily explored by car is Cologne’s world-class zoo and Botanical Gardens. The zoo is home to over 7000 animals and from here it is possible to cross into the Rheinpark on a cable car crossing the Rhine. A paradise of greenery and flowers surrounded by lawn, the park is an ideal place to relax and stroll round.

Koln-Bonn International Airport provides connecting flights to most European cities and many transatlantic destinations. Trains connect the airport to the city centre, as well as taxis and buses. Car hire can be found at the airport and is a good alternative to public transport.
