Larnaca

The city of Larnaca is located in southeast Cyprus and is fast developing as a popular tourist destination. It is a quieter alternative to the island’s frenetic resorts of Ayia Napa and Paphos. Larnaca is one of the oldest cities in the world and is awash with history and culture.

The seafront promenade is one of Larnaca’s most popular areas. It lies in the heart of the city and is lined with palm trees and popular tavernas. It was recently redeveloped and is the perfect place to relax while having a drink or something to eat. You can find the Marina, which is one of the few places where yachts can moor on the whole of Cyprus, situated close to the promenade.

There is much to do in Larnaca, with activities ranging from water sports and sunbathing to sightseeing and hiking. Cultural sights include the church of Saint Lazarus, which was built to house the tomb of Saint Lazarus, and the shrine of Hala Sultan, which is the third holiest shrine in the Muslim world. The shrine is planted with palm trees and flowers and is a peaceful refuge for both locals and tourists.

There are numerous museums to be found across the city. Two of the most interesting are the Medieval Museum and the Archeological Museum, both of which give fascinating insights into the history of life in Larnaca.

Five miles out of Larnaca, you will find the village of Kiti. The village is home to a Byzantine church which is known as Panayia Angeloktisti, or ‘built by angels’. There is a stunning mosaic of the Virgin Mary and Jesus which dates back to the 5^th century at one end of the building. There are many other quaint villages within driving distance, all of which are surrounded by wonderful scenery.
