SalzburgSalzburg is a city full of culture with many spectacular attractions. It is brimming with beautiful architecture and historical sites and is known as the centre of Baroque music. The city is famous for being the home of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
There is much to see in Salzburg, but visitors will surely want to start in the old town. The whole of the baroque old town is a UNESCO World heritage site. There are open plazas, architectural masterpieces, splendid fountains and outdoor markets to explore. Some of the most popular sites to see in the old town are the Domplatz, Kapitelplatz and Residenzplatz. Plenty of museums, castles, palaces and other sites can be found in Salzburg. The city’s history captures the interest of visitors from all over the world. One attraction popular with tourists is the 1200-year-old St Peter Church (Stiftskirch St Peter). It was here that Mozart was christened as a child.
From the 11th century Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg), visitors can get a spectacular view of the city and the Alps. It is also one of Europe’s largest castles. For more history on the famous composer, head to the Mozart’s home (Mozart-Wohnhaus). This was where some of his masterpieces were composed between 1773 and 1787. It is now a museum open to the general public. Another museum also worth a visit is the Museum of Natural History (Haus Der Natur), which has a large aquarium and reptile house. Outside of the city, there are numerous places to visit by car. The Hellbrunn Palace, several kilometres south of Salzburg, lies at the foot of Hellbrun Mountain. The palace is fascinating and even has its own water park. An hour’s drive south of Salzburg and visitors can find the Ice Caves (Eisriesenwelt Höhle) in Werfen. These Ice Caves are one of Austria’s top attractions. East of the city is Wolfgangsee Lake, where you can spend a relaxing day and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Salzburg International Airport has scheduled flights to European and Austrian destinations and is only 4kms west of the city. Travellers can hire a car from the airport to make the most of their trip. The busier airport in Munich, Germany is less than two hours away. |
